Ma’arif al-Qur’an
Read Mufti Muhammad Shafi’s commentary at the beginning of the garden passage, in the English edition available on Quran.com.
When wealth becomes a measure of human worth,
who pays the price?
The owner boasts about his wealth and social strength, assumes his garden will endure, and doubts the Hour. His companion recalls their human origin and dependence on God. The loss that follows dismantles the illusion of self-sufficiency.
The passage challenges arrogance and false security. Its contemporary economic application asks whether ownership has become power over another person’s life, labour or access to essentials.
Links to debt, taxation, multinational companies and patents are explicitly presented as contemporary ethical analysis. The parable does not describe those institutions directly.
Three source readers make the classical commentaries available alongside the passage. The cards indicate a route into each work; interpretation should be checked at the relevant verse.
A twentieth-century commentary is presented separately from the editorial applications written for this page. This makes the transition from tafsir to current social analysis visible.

Gratitude should shape contracts, pay, tax, access and risk allocation. A generous gesture does not repair an institution that continually deprives people of what they need to live.
The owner mistakes present abundance for a guarantee. Modern institutions should likewise be tested for hidden dependence and unmanaged risk.
Friendship includes principled correction. Workers and communities need a voice that can challenge power without losing their livelihood.
Contemporary application asks how accountability can act before harm becomes irreversible.
Explore the mechanisms through which wealth can be concentrated while costs and risks are shifted onto workers, children, small producers, public budgets and the environment.
Published figures are dated and kept separate from the illustrative economic model below.
Including 54 million in hazardous work. Ages 5–17; report published June 2025.
Hazardous work: about 39% of the total.
Share of the global wage bill received by the lowest-paid 10% versus the highest-paid 10%.
Bars use a common 0–40% scale. These are wage shares, not wealth shares.
Developing countries’ public-debt net interest payments in 2024, reported in A World of Debt 2025.
Public-debt evidence; not a measurement of all private or household debt.
Change the allocation of 100 illustrative revenue units. Ask which costs are justified, who decides the terms, and whether labour can secure a dignified income.
Materials/logistics are fixed at 35 units and premises/equipment at 15. This is an invented arithmetic example, not a measured brand, an economic forecast or an Adil Düzen formula.
The residual is surplus or deficit. A lower financing charge needs an actual funding arrangement; the slider does not establish that finance is costless.
An original animated dialogue inspired by the parable. The two characters debate the economy of our time and move from criticism to institutional change.

The source-based summary below draws on Adilduzen.nl. The implementation cards that follow are this page’s own proposed adaptation and evaluation framework.
The economic text proposes non-interest finance, credit linked to labour and production, and selem financing through advance payment for later delivery. It describes commodity-backed receipts, mutual guarantees, decentralised branches supported by waqf resources, and service providers participating in general-service income. Taxation is linked to services and productive activity, with protection for small producers. These are proposals within the source’s model, not a description of current law or a guarantee of results.
The political and legal text contrasts rule by strength with an order in which rules protect the rightful party. It treats public authority as service and emphasises personal responsibility. This page uses that rights-centred principle for the economic discussion; the source’s wider constitutional proposals can be studied separately.
A constructive programme must specify contracts, governance, protection, funding and public evidence of outcomes. The following design is an editorial adaptation, rather than a claim that every detail is prescribed by Adilduzen.nl.
| Current vulnerability | Proposed institution | Evidence of improvement |
|---|---|---|
| Debt absorbs productive income | Transparent production finance with fair risk allocation | Debt-service burden; net income; hardship outcomes |
| Workers cannot negotiate | Worker representation and producer associations | Real net earnings; contract stability; complaints resolved |
| Children are pushed into harmful work | School access and family-centred remediation | School attendance; safe removal; follow-up wellbeing |
| Tax pressure erodes subsistence | Fair contributions with protected essentials | Resources after tax and benefits; services actually delivered |
| Knowledge is inaccessible | Public-interest licensing and accessible research | Affordability; availability; continued innovation |
| Power can escape accountability | Independent grievance and oversight mechanisms | Time to remedy; public reporting; non-retaliation |
An illustrative implementation pathway for a producer cooperative or community enterprise. Its timing is a planning framework, not an empirical promise.
Record household livelihoods, production costs, finance terms and market access. Consult workers and families. Agree on ownership, representation, dispute procedures and public reporting.
Begin with a bounded production project. Ring-fence essential income and child protection. Publish financing costs and risk allocation. Provide an independent channel for complaints.
Compare real net earnings, stability, access and environmental obligations. Ask who was excluded. Correct failures before expanding; disclose both progress and setbacks.
A bank, business, cooperative or public body earns trust through the terms it enforces and the lives it helps protect. Changing a name does not change a structure of domination.

The focus is the owner’s arrogance, false security and disbelief. The contemporary question is whether wealth carries responsibility and whether the institutions around it protect human dignity.
No. Classical sources, modern commentary and this page’s editorial applications are presented separately. The economic examples are not attributed to the literal wording of the garden passage.
The page critiques unjust burdens and harmful restrictions. Evaluation needs the actual design, its distributional effects, its public benefits and the available alternatives.
No. Fees, loss allocation, transparency, access and hardship treatment can make or break fairness. The proposed system must be assessed by outcomes as well as its financial label.
Ethical interpretation becomes more useful when the contemporary problem is described accurately. Dates, populations and measurement scopes prevent a persuasive number from becoming a misleading claim.
